Luba’s Journey: Building a New Life with YMCA Dublin
How YMCA Dublin’s Réidh programme helped Luba find direction, community and a path to her dreams
When Luba arrived in Ireland from Zimbabwe, she faced the daunting challenge of starting over in a new country with no knowledge of the local systems or culture. Through YMCA Dublin’s Réidh Programme, she found the support and guidance she needed to rebuild her life, connect with her community, and work toward achieving her dreams of becoming a nurse.

“YMCA Dublin and the Réidh Programme are a great place to help build you up.
They guide you in every aspect of life, whether it’s pursuing further education or understanding how things work in Ireland. Whatever your goals, they’re there to help you achieve them.
I would recommend the Réidh Programme to anyone considering it. You won’t just benefit from the information they provide, but also from the strong sense of community and direction they offer.”
Luba arrived in Ireland as an asylum seeker, seeking international protection and a fresh start.
Settling in Wicklow, she quickly encountered the challenges of adapting to life in a new country. Navigating unfamiliar systems like education, taxes, and employment was overwhelming, and living in a new town without a community added to her sense of isolation. Despite these obstacles, Luba was determined to continue her education and build a meaningful career but needed guidance to take the first steps.
A Lifeline through the Réidh Programme
Luba’s journey took a positive turn when she discovered YMCA Dublin’s Réidh Programme through a local support group. She immediately recognised it as the lifeline she had been seeking. Without hesitation, Luba applied, and soon found that the programme offered far more than practical skills—it provided her with a supportive community and the guidance she needed to move forward with her life.
“The Réidh Programme was a lifeline for me. It wasn’t just about gaining skills; it was about finding direction in my new life. The support and guidance I received helped me not only secure a job but also build the confidence to pursue my dreams.”
Gaining Practical Skills and Building Connections
The Réidh Programme equipped Luba with practical training in areas such as waitressing and barista skills, which enabled her to secure a job at a local coffee shop. However, the programme’s impact went far beyond job training. It provided Luba with opportunities to explore Dublin, build friendships, and integrate into her new community. She credits the social activities and excursions for helping her feel at home and more connected to life in Ireland.
“The social integration aspect of the Réidh Programme was invaluable. Through the outings and activities, I made friends and began to feel at home in Ireland. These experiences were just as important as the certifications I earned.”
Moving Forward with Confidence
Thanks to the confidence and life skills she developed through Réidh, Luba is now preparing to take the next step in her journey. She has enrolled in a pre-nursing course, with aspirations of one day becoming a nurse. The Réidh Programme not only equipped her with practical skills but also provided her with a clear path to achieving her long-term goals.
“Every moment of my time in the Réidh Programme was valuable. From learning practical skills to exploring Dublin, the experience was excellent. It provided me with the foundation I needed to build a new life here.”

I am always impressed by the passion and dedication of the carers and managers at YMCA Dublin. The love and care they have for the children is palpable. 10/10!
The variety of activities they offer keeps the kids engaged and stimulated, and their fantastic outdoor space is a real bonus. Having their own chef is such an important feature, ensuring the children receive fresh and healthy meals daily. The care and love they give to our little boy is truly invaluable, and they are always available to provide feedback and support to parents.
Thank you for all your support and the amazing work you do!
Reflections on 175 Years of YMCA Dublin

Tim O’Hanrahan – Former Board Member (2008 – 2023)
“Every decision was guided by our mission to support young people.”

Mago Gantley – Youth Worker
“Some of the young people I worked with are adults now, and they want their children to experience the same sense of community that they had. It’s a full circle moment.”
You do monumental work and have a genuine, deep love for the children and young people in your care. Your approach to them, along with your infectious enthusiasm for what you do, shines through. You work tirelessly to provide these students with the safe space and understanding they deserve.
The AS programme has really helped me improve my behaviour and well-being. It’s been amazing! It has taught me how to better manage my temper and handle tough situations. Since I started, I’ve become a happier and more confident person in so many areas of my life.
Overall, it’s just a great experience, and it’s filled with fun and supportive people.
