Luba’s Story
How YMCA Dublin’s Réidh Programme helped Luba find direction, community, and a path to her dreams

When Luba arrived in Ireland from Zimbabwe, she was faced with the daunting challenge of starting over in a country where she had little knowledge of the local systems or culture. Arriving as an asylum seeker seeking international protection, she was determined to build a new life, but the journey ahead was far from easy. Settling in Wicklow, she quickly encountered the difficulties of adapting to life in a new country. Navigating unfamiliar systems like education, taxes, and employment felt overwhelming, and living in a town without an established community only deepened her sense of isolation.
“I didn’t know where to begin,” she recalls, reflecting on those early days of uncertainty and isolation. Despite these challenges, Luba remained committed to continuing her education and building a meaningful career, but she lacked the guidance to take those crucial first steps.
Gaining Practical Skills and Building Connections
Everything changed when Luba discovered YMCA Dublin’s Réidh Programme through a local support group. She immediately recognised it as the lifeline she had been searching for. Without hesitation, Luba applied and soon found that the programme offered far more than just practical skills—it provided her with a supportive community and the guidance she needed to move forward in her new life.
Through the programme, Luba received practical training in areas such as waitressing and barista skills, which allowed her to secure a job at a local coffee shop. But the impact of the Réidh Programme extended far beyond job training. It gave her the opportunity to explore Dublin, make friends, and feel more connected to her new community. The social activities and excursions helped her feel less isolated, giving her a sense of belonging and comfort in her new surroundings.
“The social integration aspect of the Réidh Programme was invaluable. Through the outings and activities, I made friends and began to feel at home in Ireland. These experiences were just as important as the certifications I earned.”
Moving Forward with Confidence
With newfound confidence and skills, Luba is now preparing to take the next step in her journey. She has enrolled in a pre-nursing course, with aspirations of one day becoming a nurse. The programme not only equipped her with practical skills for immediate employment but also laid out a clear path to achieving her long-term goals.
“The Réidh Programme was a lifeline for me. It wasn’t just about gaining skills; it was about finding direction in my new life. The support and guidance I received helped me not only secure a job but also build the confidence to pursue my dreams.”
“The Réidh programme was a lifeline for me."
Reflecting on her experience, Luba believes YMCA Dublin and the Réidh Programme have been essential in her journey.
“YMCA Dublin and the Réidh Programme are a great place to help build you up. They guide you in every aspect of life, whether it’s pursuing further education or understanding how things work in Ireland. Whatever your goals, they’re there to help you achieve them.”
For anyone considering the programme, Luba offers a simple, heartfelt recommendation.
“I would recommend the Réidh Programme to anyone considering it. You won’t just benefit from the information they provide, but also from the strong sense of community and direction they offer.”
