YMCA Dublin is urging men to become mentors this International Men’s Day through the PlusOne Youth Mentoring Programme, helping guide young people in Dublin toward positive futures. Studies show that mentoring strengthens community ties and supports youth development, especially for those lacking positive role models.

In communities where young people often grow up without male role models, PlusOne bridges this gap, boosting participants’ confidence and vision for the future. Data from PlusOne shows that 86% of participants report improved community engagement, 77% experience positive changes at home, and 82% feel more equipped to manage their mental health. Research supports that mentoring increases confidence, school engagement, and reduces risky behaviors, helping young people make positive life choices.

Growing up in inner-city Dublin, Jake faced challenges that led him away from school and into risky situations. With support from his PlusOne mentor, he found stability, learned self-reflection, and began envisioning a positive future. “I’m back on track now, focusing on what I want to do with my life,” he shared.

“At YMCA Dublin, we see every day how one positive role model can change a young person’s life,” said Leanne Young, Head of Youth and Community Services. “PlusOne fills that need, especially for boys seeking a male role model, and we’re calling on men to join us in making a difference.”

Mentorship doesn’t just change individual lives; it strengthens our communities. Programmes like PlusOne foster resilience, connection, and create safer, more inclusive environments for everyone.

This International Men’s Day, YMCA Dublin invites men to make a difference by becoming mentors.
